20,000 Watts of Snow

Completed AES main speakers The MTU AES (Audio Engineering Society) has done it once again. This time they have created an awesome circle of sound with two satellite systems pointing into the larger subwoofer area. I wish I could find a photo from the All nighter with everyone in the center if it just dancing like a drum circle from ancient days… It was quite the visual.

More after the jump…

I’ve included the articles in case they happen to get deleted or something in the future, basically for archiving.

Excerpt from Gizmodo

As part of a statewide snow sculpture competition, some Michigan Technological University students have added balance to the millennia of snow angel production–through the evils of rock. While source audio is played from a standard laptop, it’s powered by 9 Behringer EP2500’s, and 1 Crown XLS602, which to us normal, snowman-making guys is over 20,000 watts in amplification. But yeah, that low-wattage Bose system you just bought is still really nice.

Adding non-snow speakers to their sculpture automatically disqualifies the team from competition. So why do they do it? (plus some more impressive pictures, after the jump).

To get loud as fuck.

Other reasons cited were low cost and the joy of entertain others during statue judging…but those points just don’t rock the blockquote with equal impact.http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/20000watt-mega-speakers-made-of-snow-235577.php

Power!

Yes, that is nine Behringer EP2500’s and a Crown XLS602 totaling about 20,000+ watts.

Every year at Michigan Tech University there is a school wide Winter Carnival where the students create snow statues in a competition for bragging rights. Looking at the carnival pictures you can see medieval castle themes, trains, Viking boats, and all sorts of elaborate snow statues.

Year after year, there is one group of students who create their own version of what a snow statue should be. The student-AES chapter of MTU design and create a full-blown snow horn. It should be mentioned that these students are also automatically disqualified from the competition because they use real materials (wood, amps, subwoofers, etc.) in addition to snow in the making of their statue. (Don’t feel bad guys, they just know you would kick the crap out of the viking boats and castles if you were allowed to compete.)

A chapter member’s laptop with optical output is used as the source and feeds Dual Behringer DCX2496 crossovers. The amplification is provided by nine Behringer EP2500’s and a Crown XLS602. The highs come courtesy of eight Selenium 2″ dome compression drivers per side connected to 1″ throat horns. Midrange is from sixteen 5″ sealed back MCM cone drivers per side. There are six horn loaded Selenium 15″ drivers providing the midbass and six horn loaded Electrovoice 18″ drivers providing the sub-bass.

So for all you young Audio Junkies out there who have yet to select a college, take a serious look at MTU, you’ll be in good company.

*Selenium and Eminence were both kind enough to make donations/contributions for the creation of the snow horn.
